Milligan, Tennessee- The Brenau softball team split with Milligan (Tenn.) University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader contest on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers were slow off the gate in the opener as the squad outhit the host Buffaloes 9-6, but struggled to plate runs. Down 2-1 going into the 6th inning, Riley Smith doubled down the right field line to plate two to give the home team a 3-2 victory.
Sophomore Dayton Power led Brenau with a 2-3 afternoon at the plate, while junior Whitney Hulsey and sophomore Peyton Hawkins each added two hits in the win.
Freshman Emily Hall and sophomore Natalie Schubert combined to pitch seven innings while allowing only two runs with eight strikeouts to earn the victory.
In the second game, the Golden Tigers again outhit the Buffaloes and rallied late, but were unable to squeeze out the win in a 7-6 loss.
After getting down 7-4, Brenau answered in the sixth inning as junior Allie Busbee singled down the line to score Hawkins and cut the lead to 7-5. In the top of the 7th, junior Riley Smith scored on a throwing error to make the score 7-6, however, the Golden Tigers were unable to complete the comeback.
Busbee led the team with a perfect 4-4 day, while Smith added three hits and an RBI in the loss.
Brenau (20-7 overall, 9-3 AAC) next hosts Truett McConnell (Ga.) University (20-8 overall, 11-3 AAC) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
