Golden Tigers Squash Hornets

The Brenau basketball team defeated conference rival Southern Polytech in Marietta on Thursday night with a final score of 75-58. Though the Hornets (4-19; SSAC 2-10) were able to stay close in the first half (coming within 6 of Brenau's lead), the Tigers (11-14; SSAC 5-9) were able to outpace their opponent and pull away early in the second period. Shooting an improved team percentage of 42% with 33% from the 3-point line, in addition to out-rebounding Southern Poly 52-44, aided the Tigers in their victory. In the second half particularly, Brenau dominated the offensive glass and was able to get important second shots. In an impressive defensive effort, Brenau also held Southern Poly to a mere 28% from the field for the game.

Leading all scorers was Southern Poly's Ashlie Billingslea with 28. Brenau's balanced scoring effort was led by point guard Brittney Wiley, who connected for 19 points with 5 assists. Turning in yet another double-double performance was powerhouse Nikki Reed with 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, along with 4 assists. Also in double figures for the Tigers was Tala Black with 14 points, and Gabby Harvey, contributing 11 points with 9 rebounds and 2 steals.

Brenau Head Coach Kris Stewart said this of the contest: "This was a nice team win with four players in double figures, and I thought we moved the ball very well in the second half. We also did very well on the offensive boards and hit our shots. Everyone who played contributed, and I am pleased with the effort."

Brenau returns to action on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest against conference opponent Shorter University in Rome, GA. Shorter is currently ranked #13 nationally in the NAIA.
