Cold Shooting Dooms Golden Tigers
The Brenau basketball team fell to Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College 65-41 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup on Thursday.
In the early first half, Alyssa Nichelson (JR/Jasper, Ga.) knocked down consecutive three pointers to give the Golden Tigers a 6-0 lead. A steal and fast break layup by Autumn Dodson (FR/Jefferson City, Tenn.) extended the Brenau lead to nine at the 15 minute mark.
However, the offense struggled the remainder of the period as the Golden Tigers trailed the RedHawks 26-20 at the half.
In the second half, the cold shooting continued as Brenau struggled to finish shots. Martin Methodist jumped out to a 10 point lead quickly, and the Golden Tigers couldn't keep pace.
"We had an outstanding defensive effort for the second game in a row," said head coach Kris Stewart. "However, our offense continued to struggle. We missed easy shots and ten foul shots, which has not happened all year. I am proud of our defensive play against a good offensive team, but we have to improve on the offensive end and play a complete game".
Alyssa Nichelson led Brenau with eight points, while Kalin Williams (JR/Palmetto, Ga.) added seven points and seven rebounds.
Nina Mills led all scorers with 16 points for Martin Methodist.
Brenau (8-8 overall, 3-5 SSAC) next plays host to non-conference Morris (S.C.) College on Tuesday at 5:30 in Gainesville.
