Truett McConnell Holds Off Golden Tigers Basketball 60-58
Cleveland, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team came up just short in a 60-58 loss to Truett McConnell College on Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
"This was a very hard-fought game," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We've had a tough year with injuries, but we are still competing. We just have to find a way to close out games."
After the host Bears stormed out to an 18-10 first quarter lead, the Golden Tigers answered with a 17-12 second quarter as Jane Lester scored on back-to-back buckets to cut the lead to 24-14. Two consecutive baskets by Cameron Mims cut the lead to 30-27 going into halftime.
The game continued to stay close throughout the third and fourth quarters as the Golden Tigers kept the score close. Madison Phillips sank a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to cut the Bears lead to 60-58. After the Bears' Kinley Mitchell missed both foul shots, Brenau had a chance to tie or win the game, but committed a turnover on the ensuing possession to allow the hosts to escape with the win.
Phillips posted 16 points, while Lester added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Mims added 11 points and five boards.
Truett's Sierra Kendall led all scorers with 23 points.
Brenau next hosts Point University on Wednesday at 5:30 pm in Gainesville.
