Basketball Falls to Milligan on Senior Day
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team fell to #23 Milligan College 85-55 on Senior Day in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
"The score was not indicative of how the game was played," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We played very well throughout the first two and a half quarters, then just went cold on offense. Milligan is an excellent team and when we slumped, they played well and pulled away toward the end."
In the first quarter, the Golden Tigers led the entire period as senior Lia Thomas scored six of her team-high 16 points to give her team a 14-10 lead going into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a back and forth affair as the visiting Buffaloes scored the first nine points of the period to take the lead 20-14. Brenau responded as senior Emily Mote scored inside, then Dyiesha Brown added two points on a driving layup to cut the deficit to 30-25. Just before the half, junior Maddy Zaferatos nailed a jumper to make the score 33-27 going into the break.
In the second half, the Golden Tigers struggled to finish, shooting 29% from the field compared to Milligan's 53%, which allowed the visitors to escape with the win.
Thomas posted 16 points in her final home game, while fellow senior Madison Phillips added 12 points. Dyiesha Brown added eight points.
Milligan's Sarah Robinson led all scorers with 23 points.
Brenau finishes the 2018-19 season with a trip to Allen University on Monday for a 5:30 pm tip. The Golden Tigers previously defeated the Yellow Jackets 70-53 earlier in the year.
