
Basketball Rolls Past Columbia 82-65 on Senior Day
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team used a second half surge to roll past Columbia (SC) College 82-65 on Senior Day in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
In the first quarter the Golden Tigers shot 53% from the floor, but the visiting Koalas kept it close as Wynter Webb scored seven of her team high 20 points in the period. Webb continued her hot hand as she scored five points in the last minute of the quarter to close the gap to 15-14.
The second quarter saw both teams play at a furious pace as the lead changed twelve times in the period. Freshman Kayla Stafford scored on an offensive rebound and put back with 18 seconds remaining to even the score at 33-33, however, Columbia's Hali Doctor scored at the buzzer to give the Koalas a 35-33 advantage.
After halftime, the Koalas opened with a 6-2 run to take a 41-35 advantage, however, Brenau evened the score at 47-47 as sophomore Taylor Green hit a corner three pointer with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter. The Golden Tigers continued to hold the lead throughout the period to take a 58-55 advantage going into the fourth quarter..
In the final stanza, Brenau took command with a 19-2 run as freshman Taylor Williams and junior Jasmin Jackson combined for 14 points in the quarter. The Golden Tigers' defense locked down, holding the Koalas to 33% shooting, while the home team shot a blistering 64% to run away with the victory.
Freshman Taylor Williams led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and eight rebounds, while Jasmin Jackson added 10 points.
Brenau (6-19 overall, 5-19 AAC) next travels to Reinhardt University (16-13 overall, 15-9 AAC) for the opening round of the 2022 AAC Basketball Tournament on Monday at 5:00 pm.
