Gainesville, Georgia The Brenau basketball team put forth a stellar defensive effort to defeat Reinhardt (Ga.) University 58-54 in an AAC matchup on Wednesday.
The Golden Tigers came out on fire as the squad jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles responded with a 16-7 second quarter to make the score 25-21 going into the break. Reinhardt stormed ahead in the third quarter by outscoring the home team 27-16 to make the score 48-41 heading into the final stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the Brenau defense took charge by holding the visitors to only six points in the period. Junior Ellie Kinlaw nailed two three pointers, while senior post Kayla Stafford added five points in the fourth quarter to help lead the team to a 58-54 victory. The win was the second of the season over the Reinhardt squad who entered the game in sole possession of first place in the AAC.
Kinlaw led Brenau with 13 points, while fellow junior Anna Gliatta added 12 points. Stafford posted 12 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks and sophomore SG Bertolini added 11 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.
Julia Craft led Reinhardt (13-4 overall, 9-2 AAC) with a game-high 15 points.
Brenau (4-11 overall, 3-7 AAC) next hosts Union (Ky.) College (4-12 overall, 3-7) on Saturday for an AAC matchup at 2 pm eastern.
