Offense Falters vs Pikeville; Stafford Breaks Single-Season Blocks Record

Pikeville, Kentucky- The Brenau basketball team had a strong defensive outing, but could not match the offense in a 60-47 loss to University of Pikeville (Ky.) in an AAC matchup on Saturday.

After a competitive 17-14 first quarter, the host Bears extended their lead with an 18-11 second quarter. Pikeville's Alli Stone scored 9 points in the quarter to help her team extend its lead, but Golden Tiger senior Taylor Williams scored 4 points in the period to help keep the game close as the home team took a 35-25 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Brenau offense found its stride as junior Anna Gliatta posted 10 points in the period. The Golden Tigers cut the lead 37-31 on a Gliatta three pointer, however the squad still found itself in a 48-39 deficit going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the defense held the Bears to only 12 points, but the offense sputtered by only scoring 8 points, including shooting 27% (4-15) from the field to take the loss.

Gliatta led Brenau with 22 points, while senior post Kayla Stafford posted a career-best 22 rebounds and two blocks. The two blocks solidified her place in the Brenau record books as the all-time single season blocks leader, surpassing Tatiana Khudiakova (2010-11).

The McDonough, Ga. native earned the all time single game record (7)  earlier this season, which was also previously held by Khudiakova . Stafford is also the all-time career blocks leader in Brenau basketball history (111), surpassing Brenau Hall of Famer Gabby Harvey (2010-2013) who held the record with 81 blocks.

Allie Stone led Pikeville (11-7 overall, 10-4 AAC) with a game-high 25 points.

Brenau (4-13 overall, 3-9 AAC) next travels to take on Truett McConnell (9-10 overall, 6-7 AAC) on Monday for an AAC matchup at 5:30 pm eastern.
